Trip Description: 

Rating: Easy, backroads with great views at high elevation.

Details: 

This backroads trip will begin in Descanso, CA and wind north through scenic areas of Cleveland National Forest on a partially paved/partially dirt road with lots of elevation changes and a couple of shallow stream crossings. Suitable for any vehicle. We’ll make our way over to Lake Cuyamaca and then on to Julian where we’ll stop for lunch. Stay and shop afterwards. The trip will start out around 3400 ft of elevation and we’ll climb to almost 5000 ft with beautiful back country views (see photos below).

What to bring:

• Required:
  • Water and snacks (lunch may be a little later)
  • Any emergency & recovery gear you may have
  • Any necessary tire changing tools, including anti-theft lug nut keys
  • Sufficient fuel for your vehicle
• Recommended:
  • Family and dog (or cat, lizard, turtle, …)
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Amateur 2m radio with external antenna (very highly recommended)
