June 19, 2024, Santa Rosa Mountains
Mark and John pre-ran the Santa Rosa Mountain (August) trip to make sure the roads were still in good shape and the campground site was suitable. The main thing Mark learned is that his super duty 4WD pickup is not as capable or comfortable as his Land Rover…it made for a bigger adventure and a sore back by the time the day was done. The main thing John learned is that bees sometimes make their hives in outdoor campsite pit toilets and it is best to give them a wide berth!
The trip from north county through Temecula and Anza was short and easy. The turn off to the Santa Rosa Truck Trail came quickly, too. Then the trek up the mountain started. An hour and a half later we had travelled through chaparral and into pine and cedar forests and were treated to a great view from the campsite area.
Make sure to bring an extra layer of fleece to enjoy the cooler temperatures at 8000+ foot elevation. The August trip will be a chance for you to enjoy the smell of pines with a relatively easy drive up (11 miles at 6-10mph going up, 8-12mph coming down), but still get the rover bouncing around a bit!
Nice views along the trail!
🏔**LRCSD Trail Leader is a volunteer position. We have leaders with a ride range of trail experience – you do NOT need to have competed in a Camel Trophy or be able to navigate narrow trails blindfolded. Interested in becoming a trail leader? Or maybe you’d like to hear more about what would entail, please Email The Board or inquire at the next club meeting!
